January-February News

News from the Navarrete Vargas familyJanuary- February 2012

Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?  We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Romans 6:3-4

We thank the Lord for the opportunity to serve Him in this new year and for the opportunity to have people like you supporting us in our work.

This year, the Lord surprised us with a big opportunity.  Alvin and I received a 100% scholarship to study at college.  Alvin decided to continue with his study of Computer Engineering and I began to study Psychology.  We were chosen by the college to receive the scholarship because of our work in Carpio. He really confirmed to us once again that when we work for Him, He takes care of us, even of our smallest desires.
We are beginning a new chapter, full of many sacrifices due to the time demands of attending college.  We’re in the process of getting used to it, but the happiness that we feel about this opportunity to better prepare us to serve better gives us strength every morning.  Also, for the scholarship, we are doing a small job in a Catholic home that receives kids from a very poor, problematic community.  We have seen this time as an opportunity to tell these kids about God’s love and we have also had the opportunity to be His witnesses among our classmates in college, to whom we have given workshops about working with at-risk kids.  He has definitely given us an opportunity to continue showing Him in our lives.  What a blessing!

In January, we had the camp for the boys of New Horizons and the girls from the Life Institute.  We had around 170 people and many of the boys and girls made the decision to accept Christ in their hearts and many others made the decision to rededicate themselves to Him.  Glory to God for letting us see the results of the sowing! Alvin was the youth director of the camp and I led a cabin. Every camp is completely different and a time to see God’s glory.  During the camp Alvin and I had the opportunity to baptize three girls and two boys; it was a completely new experience and a huge blessing.

In February, we began this cycle of New Horizons with 80 boys and young men.  We also started up a semester in the Institute in January; exams will be at the end of April and beginning of May.  We have had a little more consistency this semester and we have a very good group of students, especially in the seventh grade math class where I have 14 students.  Pray for the exams that are coming up, that the boys and girls will take responsibility to study and prepare themselves, and that they will be able to see the rewards of their efforts when they get the results.

Brothers, we want to tell you that we have felt a little distressed, our economic support is really low and one of the donations that we have been receiving for a year will soon end.  We really desire with all of our heart to continue the work in Carpio and for Alvin to be there full time.  We don’t want to worry about it too much because we know that God has control, but we are a little worried about our future.  We ask that you pray with us, for us and for our finances.

We thank God for:

  • Alvin’s birthday which was February 21st.  I thank God for putting a man by my side that is so full of gifts and passion to serve God.
  •
  • The scholarship that we have received, which we feel is a reward from God, who never forgets about us.
  •
  • The boys and girls who have made the decision to follow Christ and to be a light in Carpio.
  • The strength that God has given my family, since in January another one of my uncles passed away.
  • The opportunity that we had to spend a weekend with the youth group at our church, which spent the weekend in our house studying the importance of being a light and reflecting Christ everywhere.
  • Tyler, a boy from Texas that came to live and work with us for 2 months.  We appreciate the opportunity to get to know him and serve him in our house
We pray to God for:
  • Help with our finances so we can be calmer, and also that He would fill us with peace and that we can remember that he always is taking care of us.
  • The process of adapting to our new schedule, so that we can organize our time well.
  • Ceci and her time at RENACER, that God will work in her life and speak to her, showing His love to her.
  • The students’ exams, that they can find responsibility for their future and that God would fill their minds with wisdom and intelligence.
  • Tyler who returns to the USA in a few days, that God would protect his leaving and arrival home and that his time here would bring him important lessons for life.
  • The leaders of CFCI, that the Lord would continue to fill them with wisdom to run this great ministry that God has put in their hands.
